The Ultimate Checklist for Moving Homes

checklist moving, move home, prepare move, move apartment

Moving to a different home can be stressful, especially if you tend to push things to the last minute.  Most people don't realize that a little bit of preparation can come a long way. In addition to living less stress, it will be more efficient from start to finish. If you are planning on moving this year, or you are currently in the process of moving, here is the perfect checklist to ensure that your move runs smoothly and efficiently.

Movers or Friends?

The main question that comes up again and again is: movers or friends? A mix of the two may be ideal. For example, large furniture and appliances may require professional help, while boxes may be more easily movable with your friends. In either case, there may be advantages and disadvantages.

Choosing your friends is definitely the more economical choice. You get to spend time with them and celebrate once the work is over. On the other hand, you may run into issues that include slacking or cancelling at the last minute.

As for the movers, you will have a more peaceful mind knowing that the work will get finished in a timely and professional manner. Nevertheless, the costs are higher.

How to Prepare 1 to 2 Months in advance

Planning your move a few weeks in advance will make everything run smoothly.

  • Book a day or two off for moving day.
  • Make a list of all the places you need to update your address. In order to change your address with the government, use the Service québécois de changement d’adresse.
  • Before you begin packing, sort your items and consider donating excessive clothes or dishware you no longer use.
  • Buy boxes or try asking around in various shops if they may have some lying around.
  • Start packing all non-essential items.

How to Prepare 3 to 4 Weeks Before the Move

  • Pack all remaining items except a few that will be useful until you leave.
  • Make sure you have at least one or two suitcases for your clothes.
  • Book your Internet, phone and cable installation, in your new apartment.
  • Remind your friends for your move, if necessary.
  • Be considerate of the next residents who will be occupying your apartment by patching up small holes or painting walls back to white.

How to Prepare a Week Before the Move

  • Store all your remaining clothes in suitcases and bags except clothes you will need during the week.
  • Finish packing the last remaining items.
  • Watch the weather for the day of the move. Will you need boots, a raincoat or tarps to protect certain items?
    • Start preparing essentials for the move:
    • Scissors or knives with retractable blades
    • Towels (to wipe away sweat or rain)
    • Toilet paper and hand soap
    • First Aid Kit
    • Household necessities
    • Tools
    • Garbage bags
    • Icebox containing bottled water, snacks and food

On the day of the move, you should be completely ready to move into your new apartment. Do a final check of the rooms and insure that nothing has been forgotten.
